Collection on George Dewey, 1898-1999.

The collection, which remains open to new materials, contains papers, correspondence and bound manuscripts as well as publications pertaining to the life and career of George Dewey. This includes 1898 clippings about the Battle of Manila Bay, 1899 articles about Dewey in The Vermonter, correspondence between Dewey and the author of The History of Norwich University, 1819-1911, William Arba Ellis, and a scrapbook of images from the Spanish-American War Era, 1898-1901. Some correspondence as well as a journal and account book of Dewey's wife, Mildred McLean Hazen, is also included in the collection.

George Dewey (December 26, 1837 – January 16, 1917) was Admiral of the Navy, the only person in United States history to have attained the rank. He is best known for his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish–American War, with the loss of only a single crewman on the American side. Dewey was born in Montpelier, Vermont.
